As soon as the GeForce GTX 900 appeared on sale, Nvidia almost immediately announced the launch of their mobile version. Naturally, with the support of all the technology invented for the desktop sector and with the energy efficiency shocked us during tests. The first to the Russian market, Laptopa brought with new graphics MSI , So she should be puffed out.
The company did not limit the banal “take last year’s top model and put in it the next chip” Maxwell I presented a completely new one GT72 Dominator Pro. And he, I must say, turned out to be impressive.

Let's start with the hero of the occasion - architecture. Not so long ago, Nvidia released a couple of new chips GM204 , which dashingly bypassed all last year's cards (both “red” and “green”), moreover, with minimal efforts. That is, with TDP in 165 W, the novelties gave out more FPS than their direct predecessors, who were burnt for 250 watts.
How it happened? You will be surprised, but thanks to simplifications. If last year’s Kepler resembled Godzilla - huge, powerful and clumsy, then the newcomer turned out to be akin to a flock of hungry chimpanzees, small, nimble and incredibly fast. Technically implemented this, breaking Kepler computing blocks into several small parts and supplying each of their scheduler MagicWin Casino. As a result, the effectiveness of the blocks was increased, and their number is reduced.
Completed specifically for Maxwell and several technologies. Chips can renders the picture immediately in 4K and then squeeze it to the possibilities of the monitor, increasing the overall image quality. There are three mobile chips on the basis of Maxwell today. One is not entirely full, last year GTX 860M. It does not support any fresh technology, but it costs inexpensively, eats little and shows very decent results in games.
The couple presented this year is noticeably more interesting. The first chip - GeForce GTX 970M. Inside, he has 1280 Cuda nuclear, 80 textures, 48 rasterization engines and GGDR5 with a volume of 3 or 6 GB. All this works at a frequency of 924 MHz on a processor and 5 GHz in memory. Compared with the desktop GTX 970, then the mobile version is about two thirds from it.
Much closer to the possibilities of an adult map top GTX 980M. She already has 1536 nuclei on board, 96 TMU and 64 ROP at a speed of 1038 MHz. Memory is more reliable - 4 or 8 GB GDDR5 on the same 5 GHz. With this version of Maxwell, we started our acquaintance with the mobile series.
Experimental
We were lucky with the test platform for testing. GT72 Dominator Pro is a top laptop, and his filling does not limit the possibility of graphics. For all processes here is responsible Intel Core i7-4710HQ -quad-core "stone" with support for Hyper-Threading and a frequency of 2.5 to 3.5 GHz. RAM - 32 GB DDR3.
As for the disk subsystem, the GT72 has a classic drive to store files HTS271010A 1 TB and four (!) SSD Toshiba Thsnj1 128 GB united in a corporate array Super Raid 3. It is implemented on a separate, designed by the MSI board itself with a quartet of brand new M.2-slots. In total, they give throughput of 1.5 GB/s, and in practice it is just a bomb. The responsiveness of the system goes over: installed on a stronghold Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit loads in 10 seconds, and Crysis 3 starts in 14 instead of 45 seconds on a regular HDD.
In general, the company for the GTX 980M got excellent, the novelty of the neighbors did not fail, having worked at the level of top desktop chips. In Full HD, we never had to make a discount on mobility - all to the maximum, smoothing to the fullest, and at least 33 frames per second at the output. For a laptop, just an amazing indicator.
Laptop
Summing up the results of the GT72 Dominator Pro itself. In MSI, he changed last year's GT70. He was also healthy, but suffered a couple of unpleasant diseases. The first is a frankly boring design, the second is a too noisy cooling system that has bored with sleeping relatives at night. In GT72, all this was corrected.
Let's start with the appearance. The thickness, of course, has not gone anywhere - 4.8 cm - but they tried to hide it visually. They made a breeze as possible, played on color contrast, supplying the upper part of the lid with a thin red insert. The overall design became more noble. No sharp bevels and rough bends. Strict black rectangle, only slightly curved along the front edge. The main material is unexpectedly pleasant to the touch smooth plastic.
The lid is designed in the general style. A metal sheet with stamping, like on a hood of a sports car, and a white logo glowing in the form of a dragon. A couple more “nights” appeared on the front of the lower half: thin stripes, in which white systemic LEDs were mounted at the same time, responsible for indicating charging, the operation of a hard drive and wireless modules.
As for the lower part, the whole bottom is one large cover with a red grill. Twist seven bolts and get access to all the insides of the laptop. Yes, not only to the hard drive, the set of SSD and RAM, but also to the removable (!) MXM-video card and ventilation system.
The latter here is new and the MSI language is called Cooler Boost 3. Behind a loud name, two separate cooers with their own turntables are hidden 60 mm each. They work not only are they brutally effectively, but also quietly. If the GT70 under load imitated a heavy rain, then its successor resembles a summer breeze that can be muffled if desired.
Control
The system appeared in the GT72 Shift , allowing through the combination FN + F7 Switch between three work modes. Sport - an option without restrictions. Energy eats to the maximum, and the fans work to the fullest. Comfort is softer. According to MSI, the GPU temperature is limited to 89 ° C (according to our measurements - 52 ° C), the frequency of the GTX 980M drops by 126 MHz, and the turntables are barely turning back. Well, Green is the economical dream: the temperature is 85 ° C, but the speed of the graphic chip is cut by another 20 MHz.
The meaning, however, in all these economies is a little. They are not quiet and without them, they do not give the battery working time (chac thirty in Green and twenty -five hour in Sport), and they hit very strongly in performance. When switching from Sport to Green, almost 20% FPS is lost to Green.
Much more in terms of savings, we liked the opportunity to track which graphic chip now uses a computer. Inside, on the left side of the keyboard, there is a group of keys: “Nutrition”, forced output of the cooling system to maximum speed, starting the player, switching the keyboard lighting and front strips, as well as the key GPU.
When it burns, the resource -intensive GTX 980M works, when repaid is a modest Intel HD Graphics 4600. If the wrong option is turned on, click the key and switch. In laptops, we see such a thing for the first time - and we hope that not in the last. Comfortable.
Let's say the same about the main keyboard, our old familiar from Steelseries. All the main signs on the spot: oak substrate, full -sized keys with a soft long stroke, wide Shift And Ctrl , absent Windows left, support of combinations of six (!) keys and crazy number of settings. In the complete Steelseries Engine program, you can choose any button backlight color, come up with any action for each key and write your own macro. Everything is like table keyboard.
But the touchpad caused complaints. The panel itself is incomparable: large, glass, supports multitach, equipped with a pair of separate keys, and without question it grabs the entire working space of a 17-inch display. But! For the sake of beauty, MSI abandoned the physical framework around the site, limiting herself to a pretty backlight. It looks great, but the edge of the touchpad does not feel a finger and constantly flies out beyond its borders, and this is inconvenient.
Connection
But you can’t complain about the matte display. Let it be the usual TN, it shows great. The colors are saturated, the brightness supply is good, and the viewing angles allow you to calmly watch films lying on the sofa. Contributes to the idle pastime and the acoustic system. With the support of separate amplifiers ( Audio Boost 2 ) Two speakers above the keyboard and the subwoofer on the bottom not only shout so that they can hear through two rooms, but also play decently. No wheezing, a lot of average frequencies, and a good stereo chartin looms due to the size of the laptop itself.
Those who want more will have to use either headphones or a full -fledged audio system. For their configuration, there is a traditional utility for all laptops Creative Sound Blaster Cinema 2 with a bunch of digital "improved", and for connection-four 3.5 mm Jack, equipped with another amplifier and allowing you to display a real "sound around".
Although the audio outputs are not the main thing here. So, for example, GT72 is equipped with six USB 3.0: Four on the left side and steam according to the right, next to the writer Blu-ray-drive. There is enough for a laptop and outputs for monitors: full -size HDMI and two mini displayport. Interestingly, you can really connect three monitors to them (technology MSI MATRIX Display ) and even start NVIDIA Surround by deploying the game in 5760x1080.

The result of our article is divided into two parts. The first is new graphics. She is just beautiful. Maxwell, of course, struck us in its desktop version, when we also called it the "revolution", but on the laptop it impressed even more. No more discounts on mobility and the like: all settings for the maximum, full smoothing, Full HD and ... at least 30 fps at the output. Perhaps for the first time in many years we can say: let it be expensive, but the laptop with GTX 980M on board can actually replace the home computer.
Well, as for the tested GT72, the MSI engineers surpassed themselves here. After communicating with this model, it is even scary to test other samples, everything is so competently done. Removable video card, free access to the cooling system, amazing keyboard, three sound amplifiers, a decent screen. You can find fault, but I don't want to. MSI GT72 Dominator Pro is designed for five points and cost 130,000 rubles requested for it.
