William Lee: Sit on your ass!
In 1950s Mexico, a forty-year-old American immigrant lives a solitary life in a small American community. But the arrival of a young student inspires the man to finally make a meaningful connection with someone. Daniel Craig was ultimately the one who convinced Luca Guadagnino to play Drew Starkey after watching audition tapes with Guadagnino and telling him "That's the guy" when he saw Starkey. It is an empty existence
The second most common usage is "homosexual". Both meanings apply to this film, but the first meaning is probably the most appropriate. This movie has a lot more in common with APOCALYPSE NOW than it does with BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. The story revolves around "Lee", a man in his fifties. He is an American who has achieved a certain level of material success and now lives a rather hedonistic expat life in Mexico. He is an alcoholic and in the early stages of drug addiction. He spends his days and nights hanging out in gay bars and having pointless affairs with men he has nothing in common with except that they are homosexual. what does he want He would like to know.
He can't put it into words
He meets a younger man who appears to be bisexual (his companion in the bar scene is a woman), but they form a relationship. This is not very satisfying to him. He wants more from the younger man than the younger man is willing to give. He eventually convinced him to accompany him on a trip to the jungles of South America in search of a plant that contained a drug that would supposedly allow him to develop telepathic powers. He believes that this drug will allow him to understand what he wants without using words. He is told that there is a shaman in the jungle who can bring him a plant. The two men enter the jungle and indeed find a woman played with ferocious force by Lesley Manville, an old woman who has a knife and a gun and seems bloodthirsty. They at least partially gain her trust, but she warns them not to use drugs.
The acting is also exceptional
It will open doors they cannot close. I'm glad I saw this movie, but it's not for everyone. The ending is mysterious and the gay sex scenes might be a little too specific for some people. It's not quite sophisticated porn, but, especially with the sound effects, it comes close. And drug-induced hallucinations can also be very disturbing to some people. This movie is amazing to watch; the art direction and cinematography are exceptional, each scene beautifully composed. It reminds me of Edward Hopper's paintings of objective mental isolation. Daniel Craig can break your heart by doing very little.
It's a great show
I predict that he and Lesley Manville will get Oscar nominations - Manville could win for Best Supporting Actress. It wasn't until I saw her name in the end credits that I realized she was the same actress who played the title role in MRS HARRIS GOES TO PARIS. I think this film will become a staple in the arthouse film circuit. Definitely worth seeing more than once.
