Tale
In times of war, a poor woodcutter and his wife live in a large forest. One day, the woman finds and rescues a little girl, bringing an irrevocable change to the lives of the couple and those whose paths will cross with the girl. The Second World War is one of humanity's darkest times. A time when humanity has just given up on grey warfare, where the world witnessed the extent of human cruelty.
A time when rebirth, redemption and peace were promised
The hand of faith has just struck Europe in the usual gruesome way, with the massive debt of a great war and a lost generation towering over it. The world stood still, not because of Schick, or at least not just because of him, but because of what lies beneath. Ahead of what is the world's greatest tragedy up to that point lies an increasingly bleak future. Germany lay in ruins, having lost a war, the faith of its people and the power of its empire.
Revenge was sworn for the humiliation
A few years after that remarkably dark period, there was a humble, elderly German carpenter couple. The man went to cut down big trees and the woman tied the small branches together. Both of them spent a hard day's work to reach a small house in the middle of the forest where soup and a tired old dog awaited them. Never having had a child, the woman begs for everything there is, having abandoned God or never having caught up with Him.
And one day the train gods answered her prayers
She prays to heaven, to wood, and even to the train gods for a train. In that empty corner of the forest, a train came through the white winter snow, slowly but clumsily arriving at its dreaded destination. And one day a baby is thrown from the train only for the old woodswoman to pick it up. A heartless thing to do to some, but not to her.

What follows is a beautifully realized tragedy, a story of humanity: the loving force within that builds and sacrifices and its inherently evil side that comes back and retaliates. Michel Hazanavicius' animated film borrows a highly comical style that places you in the heart of an enchanted forest, along with its quirky set of characters and grim World War II setting, it is one of the best tearjerkers of the year.
