While the rest of America was thriving, Montana was struggling
Tale
The Duttons faced new challenges in the early 20th century, including the rise of western expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. While the Great Depression began in 1929, it began early in Montana. The Great Depression began in Montana in 1918, nearly 10 years before the rest of the country. Between drought and reduced demand for agricultural products, due to the end of the "Great War" (also known as World War I, from 1914 to 1918), many farmers suffered greatly.
Also, 200 Montana banks went bankrupt
As a result, Montana farmers defaulted on war loans, leading to widespread bank failures across the state. Between 1921 and 1925, half of Montana's farmers lost their land. By 1925, 70,000 of Montana's 82,000 landowners had left. Not only were crops affected by the drought, but it was followed by a locust infestation and livestock succumbed to the contagion.
Hard to follow after this
Featured in Διαχρονικοί ήρωες: Indiana Jones & The Dark Knight (2023). Almost everything about this predecessor to the series was perfect. It does an okay job, but it's clearly set up for something much, much longer. And the stakes are completely different.
It's the contrast that hurts
In 8 long episodes, probably 4 episodes of stuff happening. There are some really good moments, but it's going around in circles in favor of a very slow burn, which is unfortunate. Setting the bar so high and trying to clear it in an entirely different way is not the best way to go, it's far from bad though. Fortunately, there are still some very good performances.
The new characters seem well placed
The occasional return of the narrator from 1883 is also very welcome. I just feel like he's a little toothless.
